From Conflict to Connection: How D.F. Pace Brings Peacebuilding to Policing

In a featured piece by Rotary International, Inspector D.F. Pace shares how his experience in the Rotary Peace Fellowship program transformed his approach to policing. With more than 20 years in law enforcement, Pace recognized early signs of growing tension between police and the public. “Even before events like what happened in Ferguson, I saw an unease developing,” he said, noting that if left unaddressed, it could escalate further. Through his studies in conflict resolution and peacebuilding, Pace gained tools that emphasized active listening, emotional regulation, and community trust—skills he now incorporates in both police leadership and public engagement. Viewing conflict as a neutral force, he believes, “The good or bad comes from how we manage conflict,” a philosophy he now brings to every interaction, from internal police dynamics to community relations.
